Getting stains out of a fabric sofa without ruining it
Most sofa stains that become permanent were survivable when they happened. What kills them is the first thirty seconds of panic.
Three rules
First: blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibre and frays the surface pile, which leaves a permanent dull patch even after the stain itself is gone.
Second: test on a hidden section — the back, or under a cushion — and wait five minutes. Colour-fastness varies enormously, and some dyes lift instantly with mild detergent.
Third: cold water, not hot, for anything protein-based. Blood, milk, egg and most food spills set permanently when heated. Hot water is right for grease and wrong for almost everything else.
When to stop and call someone
- The stain has spread wider than when you started
- The fabric is marked 'S' — solvent clean only, no water
- It's ink, dye, or anything from a permanent marker
- The sofa is leather or suede
- You've already tried three things
That last one matters more than people think. Each product you try can react with the last, and by the fourth attempt a professional is often working around your chemistry rather than the original stain.
